Chapter 4

Cullen canceled the engagement dinner scheduled for the following weekend.

He also suspended Chase from all work connected to the Ravello estate.

Neither decision remained private for long.

Chase supervised outside security vendors for several Ravello properties.

Removing him created an immediate staffing problem.

Tove’s family heard about the canceled dinner before lunch.

By evening, Cullen had received calls from two senior associates asking whether the wedding was still happening.

He answered every one the same way.

“No.”

Not “postponed.”

Not “we’re working through something.”

No.

Then he changed every household access code assigned to Tove and Chase.

The decision cost him more than convenience.

Tove had clothing, jewelry, and personal belongings in the mansion.

Her attorney requested access to retrieve them.

Chase’s replacement security vendor demanded a rush fee.

Staff began whispering.

Cullen accepted all of it.

What he did not accept was Tove’s explanation.

She sent him a long email insisting Margaret had spent months undermining her.

She claimed Mireya’s asthma was real but mild, and Margaret repeatedly escalated ordinary coughing into panic.

Then she attached something Cullen had forgotten existed.

A message from Cullen himself.

Three months earlier he had written:

Mom is making Mireya dependent on her. I need Tove to take more responsibility.

Cullen stared at his own words.

Tove had used them repeatedly.

With staff.

With the preschool.

With Chase.

Margaret had not merely been dismissed by Tove.

Cullen had helped establish the reason everyone dismissed her.

That evening he went into Mireya’s bedroom.

She was asleep with one hand near the inhaler pouch Margaret had placed beside her.

Cullen sat down.

He had spent most of his adult life believing danger announced itself loudly.

A threat.

A weapon.

A betrayal.

This one had arrived disguised as someone agreeing with him.

The following morning Cullen called Mireya’s pediatric pulmonologist.

He wanted every appointment note from the previous six months.

What he found there made Tove’s behavior harder to explain as simple ignorance.
