Chapter 15

The engagement ended permanently.

Tove collected the last of her belongings from the Ravello mansion under an agreed schedule and never returned.

The conservatory incident remained part of an active legal process involving the treatment of Mireya and the assault on Margaret.

Cullen’s own actions against Chase and Tove were reviewed separately.

He did not claim that protecting his daughter gave him unlimited permission to use violence.

His attorneys negotiated the consequences through normal proceedings, including fines and required anger-management counseling.

Chase lost his role with the Ravello Foundation after the independent review concluded that he had failed to disclose material financial problems connected to the proposed development and had improperly participated in efforts to undermine Margaret’s credibility.

His company survived, but without the foundation guarantee.

Creditors forced him to restructure debt.

There was no single day when everything collapsed.

There were months of consequences.

Margaret remained on the foundation board long enough to help establish new conflict-of-interest rules.

Then she resigned on her own terms.

She did not move back into Cullen’s mansion.

That consequence hurt Cullen more than losing control of any board.

He changed the house anyway.

Medical instructions were posted clearly for every caregiver.

Mireya’s medication stayed in designated locations.

No fiancée, relative, associate, or senior employee could override a doctor’s instructions because of family status.

Cullen also reduced the number of business meetings held at home.

The conservatory became Mireya’s room again rather than another extension of family operations.

Months later, Cullen found his daughter sitting beneath one of the citrus trees coloring beside Margaret.

Margaret had come for Sunday lunch.

She had been doing that more often.

Not every Sunday.

Enough that Mireya had stopped asking whether Grandma was angry.

Cullen carried a tray of lemonade toward them.

Margaret looked up.

“I can get my own.”

“I know.”

He set the glass beside her anyway and returned to his chair.

Mireya took out her inhaler pouch and placed it beside her crayons without anyone commenting.

A minute later she looked toward Margaret.

“Grandma, you sleeping here tonight?”

Margaret’s pencil stopped.

Cullen said nothing.

He had learned not to answer questions that belonged to someone else.

Margaret looked toward the staircase leading to the guest rooms.

Then toward her handbag resting beside her chair.

“I brought pajamas,” she said.

Mireya smiled and went back to coloring.

Cullen did the same thing he had been learning to do for months.

He did not push.

May you like

He did not assume.

He simply made room beside them.
