Chapter 12

Calista contacted Father first.

A letter.

Not apology alone.

Question.

Why did you never tell Leander?

Father asked me whether he should answer.

“Your decision.”

He hated that phrase now because I used it constantly.

Good.

He wrote back.

Because I was a coward in one very specific way: I could face enemies more easily than my son’s disappointment.

I read it only because Father showed me.

That sentence stayed.

Our world trains men to face guns, threats, betrayal.

Then they collapse before intimacy.

Father feared me seeing him smaller.

So he maintained the lie.

Calista answered once.

My mother thought you forgot her.

Father cried.

Quietly.

Then wrote:

I did not forget. I chose not to repair what I remembered.

More honest.

That exchange continued three letters.

No forgiveness.

No family reunion.

Calista eventually told him something he never knew.

Evelyn kept the original photograph because despite everything, it came from one of the happiest years of her life before the accusation.

She did not want Wynthrop erased.

She wanted what happened named correctly.

That destroyed Calista in a different way.

She had built revenge partly from believing her mother wanted erasure returned with erasure.

Maybe Evelyn would have hated the six-month imprisonment.

Maybe not.

Dead people do not exist to validate us.

Calista had made her mother into a mandate.

Father had made Tobias into an excuse.

Both used the absent to support choices the absent could not challenge.

That lesson spread through the house.

May you like

Slowly.

Painfully.
