Chapter 6

The ashes sat on the memorial table all night.

I did not remove them.

Not yet.

I wanted to understand why they existed.

Calista explained the practical story she created.

Father kept an old brazier beside the garden house.

She burned his coat, cane, shoes, books, and an old wool blanket.

Mixed everything.

Placed some ash inside an antique urn.

Told me the remaining damage had made ordinary identification impossible.

I had wanted details then.

She cried.

Said reliving it hurt.

I stopped asking.

Love can make interrogation feel cruel.

Sometimes that is how lies survive.

“What did you do with his signet ring?”

Father looked toward Calista.

She opened her evening bag.

There it was.

Six months.

She had carried it.

Why?

“I couldn’t burn it.”

Of course.

Conscience leaves strange souvenirs.

I took it.

Father held out his hand.

I almost placed it automatically on his finger.

Then stopped.

“Do you want it?”

He looked at me.

Surprised.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

I gave it back.

That tiny question mattered more than I expected.

For six months, everything had been decided for him.

Death.

Silence.

Room.

Visitors.

Food.

When he could roll outside.

When he could know what I was doing.

Even his identity.

I would not continue the pattern in the name of rescuing him.

He slid the ring on.

Loose now.

He had lost weight.

Calista started crying.

Father looked at her.

Not cruelly.

That surprised me.

“I wronged Evelyn.”

She stiffened.

“Yes.”

“I deserved exposure.”

“Yes.”

“I did not deserve imprisonment.”

Long silence.

“No.”

That was the first clean thing Calista said all day.

Father continued.

“You wanted me to understand being erased.”

Her head lifted.

There.

That had been part of it.

She admitted it.

Evelyn lost name.

Work.

Reputation.

Future.

Father continued living comfortably.

Calista wanted him to disappear while the world spoke about him inaccurately.

To feel what her mother felt.

But revenge has a flaw.

It cannot reproduce the original harm cleanly.

It only creates a second victim and calls symmetry justice.

Father understood.

May you like

Calista was beginning to.

I was somewhere between.
