Chapter 16

Father died at eighty-two.

Actually died.

That sentence still feels strange.

No mystery.

No locked room.

No ashes prepared before truth.

His heart stopped during sleep after weeks of declining health.

Tilda called me.

I arrived.

Sat beside him.

Touched his hand.

Cold.

Final.

Different from an urn.

Different from a portrait.

Different from six months of believing.

We held a memorial.

Smaller than the first.

No theatrical portrait wall.

One photograph.

Father laughing badly during his eighty-first birthday.

Tilda chose it.

Perfect.

This time there was no urn.

Father had requested burial.

Clear instructions.

His funeral was sad.

Ordinary.

That felt almost sacred.

Calista attended at the back.

No one hid her.

No one forced her forward.

Afterward she placed a small photograph near the flowers.

Evelyn Arden.

Young.

Smiling.

I recognized Father beside her.

Same image.

On the back Calista had written nothing.

Good.

No slogan.

No attempt to make two lives resolve neatly after death.

Father had harmed Evelyn.

He had also regretted it.

Calista had harmed Father.

She had also changed.

None canceled another.

History did not need a winner.

It needed accurate names.

That evening I went home.

The ballroom felt empty.

Tilda sat with tea near the window.

No uniform now.

She had become Father’s senior care coordinator and planned to move into elder-services work elsewhere.

I asked:

“Leaving?”

“Yes.”

I expected sadness.

Felt pride instead.

“Good.”

She laughed.

“Most bosses try to keep competent people.”

“Most bosses don’t have you correcting them for five years.”

“Four.”

“Felt longer.”

She threw a napkin at me.

May you like

Normal.

Father would have approved.
