Chapter 13

Calista apologized to Tilda after a year.

Not before.

Tilda refused the first request.

Calista accepted it.

Good.

Second request six months later.

Tilda agreed.

They met in the conservatory.

Open doors.

Father nearby because Tilda asked.

I did not attend.

Later Tilda told me only the parts she wanted.

Calista said:

“I hit you because you made the truth move faster than I could control it.”

Good.

Specific.

“I threatened your work because I thought your position made you easier to silence.”

Better.

“And I tried to cover his face because for one second I thought if nobody saw him clearly, the lie could still survive.”

There.

Tilda asked:

“Did you really think that?”

Calista answered:

“No.”

Then:

“I just needed three more seconds.”

That was painfully human.

People do absurd things when a constructed reality collapses.

Three seconds.

One cloth.

One slap.

As if time could be pushed backward.

Tilda did not forgive her.

She did say:

“I believe you understand it now.”

Enough.

Afterward Father asked Tilda:

“Did she look well?”

Tilda laughed.

“You care?”

“I’m nosy.”

Alive indeed.

Calista never came back into my life romantically.

Important.

Understanding does not rebuild suitability.

She moved away.

Started working with a historical restoration trust.

Irony.

Preserving old houses while learning old stories should not be preserved unchallenged.

Father found this funny.

May you like

So did I.

Eventually.
