Chapter 14

The consequences took months.

Not one dramatic night.

Months.

Marco lost every position tied to Ventresca businesses.

Several people demanded repayment for money collected under promises Alessio never made.

Marco sold property to cover part of it.

The rest became his problem.

Vincent lost access to the organization he had helped build.

Some longtime associates stopped answering his calls immediately.

Others listened to his explanation and chose Alessio anyway.

A few walked away from both men.

Alessio allowed them to.

Claudia was barred from the estate.

Not permanently from Evelyn.

That decision was not Alessio’s to make alone.

Teresa helped arrange supervised contact when Evelyn eventually asked for it.

The first meeting lasted twenty-three minutes.

The second lasted forty.

Some weeks Evelyn refused entirely.

Claudia learned something she had spent years avoiding:

She could not order her daughter to trust her.

The garden took longest.

Samuel refused to replace everything at once.

“Isabella didn’t build it in a day,” he told Alessio.

So they rebuilt slowly.

Ruby chose flowers.

Evelyn helped when she wanted.

Alessio carried soil.

The bodyguards discovered their boss was terrible at planting bulbs.

Ruby laughed at him.

It was the first time she had laughed in that garden since the luncheon.

One afternoon she stood beside the reflecting pond holding another flowering plant.

Alessio immediately felt tension in his chest.

Ruby noticed.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Can I put it here?”

She pointed toward the edge of the pond.

Alessio looked at the water.

Then at her.

“You sure?”

Ruby nodded.

“Mom liked flowers near water.”

Together they planted it.

The narrow strip of white irises remained untouched.

Not because something was still buried beneath them.

Nothing was.

Alessio kept them because Isabella had turned them into something stronger than evidence.

A warning.

Claudia had spent years fearing the soil.

But the soil had never held her secret.

Her own choices had.

That evening Evelyn stood beside Alessio near the greenhouse.

“Are you mad at my mom forever?”

Alessio considered the question.

“Yes.”

Evelyn looked down.

Then he added:

“But you don’t have to be.”

She looked at him.

“Whatever you feel about her belongs to you.”

For a man who had spent most of his life telling others where they belonged, it was a difficult lesson.

He was learning it anyway.
