Chapter 15

The following spring, Isabella’s memorial garden opened again for a small family luncheon.

No temporary crews.

No elaborate decorations.

No people invited merely because their presence looked powerful.

Ruby ran between the beds wearing gardening gloves that were still too large for her hands.

Evelyn followed carrying a basket of seedlings.

Teresa sat beneath the pergola drinking coffee.

Samuel complained that everyone stepped too close to the new peonies.

Alessio stood beside the greenhouse.

For the first time in years, the place felt like Isabella’s garden again rather than a monument nobody knew how to touch.

Ruby came running toward him.

“Daddy, look.”

She held a small white iris.

Samuel immediately called from across the lawn:

“She did not pick that from the memorial strip!”

Ruby giggled.

“No! Samuel gave it to me.”

Alessio took the flower.

“Good.”

Ruby looked toward the narrow strip.

“Is Mom’s treasure still there?”

Alessio crouched.

Months earlier she had overheard adults mentioning the box.

He had explained only that Isabella left something important behind.

“No.”

“Where is it?”

Alessio touched two fingers lightly against Ruby’s chest.

“Some of it is here.”

Ruby frowned.

“That’s not a box.”

He smiled.

“No.”

She ran away before he could become sentimental.

Evelyn approached more slowly.

She had seen Claudia the previous weekend.

The visit had gone well.

Not perfectly.

Just well.

For this family, that counted as progress.

“Mom asked if she can come here someday.”

Alessio looked toward the garden.

“What did you say?”

“I said I didn’t know.”

“Then you don’t have to decide today.”

Evelyn nodded.

She joined Ruby near the planting tables.

Alessio remained by the greenhouse.

His phone vibrated once.

Samuel had finished identifying almost everyone visible in Isabella’s recovered recordings.

Almost.

One man remained unknown.

He appeared only once.

A tall figure entering through the greenhouse service path minutes before Vincent arrived.

His face never turned toward the camera.

No employee remembered him.

Vincent claimed not to know who he was.

Marco claimed the same.

Alessio had no proof either man was lying.

Months earlier, that unanswered question would have consumed him.

He would have emptied rooms, pressured people, and turned suspicion into punishment until somebody gave him a name.

Instead he locked the phone.

The question would remain open until there was an answer worth trusting.

Across the garden, Ruby was trying to teach Evelyn how deeply to plant a seedling.

“You have to be gentle,” Ruby said seriously.

Evelyn laughed.

Alessio watched them.

Behind them stood the white irises Isabella had planted years earlier.

Nothing dangerous was buried beneath them.

Nothing ever had been.

Yet those flowers had survived Claudia’s fear, Marco’s greed, Vincent’s betrayal, and Alessio’s own blindness.

Ruby suddenly waved.

“Daddy! Come help!”

Alessio stepped away from the greenhouse wall.

He walked toward his daughter.

And this time, when he entered Isabella’s garden, there was nothing left beneath his feet that he needed to fear.
