Chapter 9

Alessio did not move.

Teresa sat beside Evelyn.

“You’re not in trouble.”

Evelyn looked toward Alessio.

“My mom said I would be.”

“For taking it?”

“For knowing.”

The girl had been nine years old when she found Claudia digging beneath the white irises late one evening.

Claudia was frantic.

She had already removed several stones.

Evelyn asked what she was looking for.

Claudia screamed at her to go inside.

The next afternoon, curiosity brought Evelyn back.

One stone remained loose.

She lifted it.

Beneath the soil was a small metal gardening tin wrapped in plastic.

Evelyn opened it.

Inside were memory cards, folded photographs, and a brass key.

She did not understand what any of it meant.

But she understood her mother was afraid of it.

So she hid it.

“Where?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“In the greenhouse.”

Alessio almost smiled at the irony.

Claudia had searched the greenhouse repeatedly.

“Where inside?”

Evelyn pointed toward an old child-sized potting bench Isabella had built when Evelyn was little.

One leg was hollow.

The bottom plug could be removed.

Evelyn had pushed the tin inside and replaced the cap.

It had remained there for three years.

Alessio stared at the bench.

Marco had stood within six feet of it the previous day.

Samuel retrieved the tin carefully.

Rust marked the edges.

The plastic wrapping had preserved most of what was inside.

Alessio did not immediately open everything.

He photographed the condition first.

Then he brought Samuel and Teresa into the room.

No secret.

No accusation built on one man’s memory.

The first items were still photographs printed from Isabella’s wildlife camera.

Vehicles.

People entering the greenhouse at night.

Marco.

Claudia.

Businessmen Alessio recognized.

Several he had explicitly refused to meet.

Then came the memory cards.

Samuel still had an old reader compatible with them.

The footage was grainy.

Motion-activated.

No dramatic confessions.

No perfect audio.

But enough.

Claudia meeting men after midnight.

Marco carrying envelopes.

Cars arriving through the side entrance.

Dates that matched witness memories.

Then one clip began differently.

Isabella herself walked into frame.

Claudia followed her.

Even without clear audio, their body language was unmistakable.

An argument.

Isabella pointed toward the camera.

Claudia looked up.

She finally realized it existed.

Then Isabella reached for the camera and removed the memory card.

The footage ended.

Alessio stared at the black screen.

Evelyn whispered:

“There’s another card.”

She pointed toward the bottom of the tin.

One remained beneath the photographs.

On the paper sleeve, Isabella had written only two words.

FOR ALESSIO.
