Chapter 8

The next week changed the Ventresca household.
Not because Alessio found the box.
Because people started talking.
Once Samuel learned Alessio genuinely did not know what Claudia and Marco had been doing, he remembered late-night cars at the greenhouse service drive.
A cook remembered Claudia asking staff to prepare food for “private family meetings” Alessio never attended.
A bodyguard remembered Marco borrowing estate vehicles and telling him Alessio approved.
A florist remembered cash-filled envelopes hidden beneath centerpiece boxes after certain dinners.
None of them had enough information alone.
Together, they described a parallel network.
Claudia had built it slowly.
She cultivated people who wanted proximity to Alessio.
Marco arranged meetings.
They collected money and favors.
Sometimes they delivered small results using contacts they legitimately possessed.
Other times they merely allowed clients to believe Alessio stood behind them.
It was not only theft.
It was borrowed authority.
Alessio understood why Isabella had reacted so strongly.
His name was not simply his reputation.
In their world, it could become someone else’s weapon.
Ruby knew none of this.
That was intentional.
She spent afternoons helping Samuel rescue damaged plants.
Some could be replanted.
Others were gone.
One evening she carried a broken stem into Alessio’s office.
“Can this one live?”
He looked at it.
“I don’t know.”
Ruby frowned.
“Mom said sometimes roots look dead but aren’t.”
Alessio swallowed.
“Your mom said that?”
Ruby nodded.
“She told Samuel.”
He took the stem.
“Then we try.”
Ruby smiled.
At the doorway Evelyn watched.
She had been staying with Teresa for several nights because she refused to sleep in Claudia’s room.
Claudia hated it.
She sent message after message.
Apologies.
Anger.
Accusations.
Promises.
Evelyn answered none.
That night she found Alessio in the greenhouse.
“I lied to you.”
He looked up.
Teresa stood nearby.
“About what?”
Evelyn stared at the floor.
“I saw the box.”
Alessio went still.
“When?”
“After Aunt Isabella died.”
“Where?”
“Under the white flowers.”
There it was.
The answer he had been chasing.
May you like
But Evelyn continued.
“And then I took it.”
