Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the sprawling, manicured lawn of the estate, painting the scene in incredibly bright, vivid colors. The sky was a brilliant, flawless blue, offering a cinematic, natural lighting that carried absolutely no yellow tint. Beneath the shade of a massive oak tree, the birthday party was in full swing. Laughter drifted through the warm American air, sharp and clear. Every guest in attendance shared a striking resemblance: white American families with fair, rosy skin, perfectly styled hair, and the unmistakable, crisp cadence of wealthy American accents.

Eleven-year-old Grace stood near the edge of the patio, feeling entirely out of place despite her beautiful, pale blue party dress and matching flats. Her fair skin was flushed a rosy pink from the summer heat and a creeping, familiar anxiety.

"Grace, come over here," a sharp voice called out.

Grace turned to see Sabrina, a thirty-nine-year-old woman wearing a vibrant, expensive floral blouse, tailored trousers, and heavy gold jewelry that caught the bright sunlight. Sabrina’s smile never quite reached her cold, calculating blue eyes. Beside Sabrina stood the matriarch of the family, Grace’s sixty-four-year-old Grandmother, draped in an elegant cream cardigan, a pristine silk blouse, trousers, and designer flats.

"Yes, Aunt Sabrina?" Grace asked politely, her voice trembling slightly as she walked toward the heavy wrought-iron patio chair.

"Sit down, sweetheart," Sabrina instructed, her American accent dripping with a toxic, artificial sweetness. "We need to fix your hair. It’s a complete mess, just like your mother’s life."

"My hair is fine," Grace said, her hands nervously smoothing the fabric of her party dress. "Mommy braided it this morning before her shift at the hospital."

"Your mother works in a hospital, wearing those dreadful medical scrubs," Grandmother sneered, her fair, wrinkled face contorting with judgment. "She has no concept of elegance. You look like a street urchin at my granddaughter’s birthday party. Sit in the chair, Grace."

"I don't want to sit," Grace replied, her heart beginning to hammer against her ribs. She looked around the bright, colorful yard, hoping to see a friendly face, but the other guests were busy chatting near the extravagant cake.

Sabrina stepped forward, the sunlight flashing off a pair of sharp, silver scissors hidden slightly behind her floral sleeve. "We weren't asking, Grace. We are telling you. Your mother isn't here to coddle you today. It is time you learned how to look presentable in front of this family."

"Please, I want to wait for my mom," Grace pleaded, taking a step backward.

Grandmother moved with a sudden, terrifying speed for a woman of her age. She grabbed Grace by the arm, her manicured fingers digging painfully into the girl's fair, rosy skin.

"You will do as you are told, you insolent child," Grandmother hissed, dragging the struggling eleven-year-old toward the iron chair. "You are going to sit down, and you are going to let Sabrina fix this absolute disaster on your head."
