Chapter 3

The horrific scene continued under the blinding, vivid afternoon sun. A few feet away, standing beside the massive, multi-tiered birthday cake, was Bella. The twelve-year-old girl was dressed in an extravagant, frilly birthday dress, holding a beautifully wrapped party gift in her hands. Bella’s fair, rosy face was completely devoid of empathy. She simply watched her cousin being humiliated, occasionally popping a piece of candy into her mouth, thoroughly entertained by the spectacle.
"You missed a spot on the left, Aunt Sabrina," Bella called out, her American accent dripping with spoiled arrogance. "Make it even shorter. Make her look like a boy."
"I'm trying, darling, but the little rat keeps squirming," Sabrina replied, adjusting her grip on the scissors and reaching toward the front of Grace's head.
Unnoticed by the three cruel women, ten-year-old Connor stood a few yards away near the garden hedges. Dressed in a crisp polo shirt and tailored shorts, Connor was holding a digital tablet up at chest level. The camera lens was pointed directly at the iron chair. His fair skin was pale, his eyes wide and unblinking behind the screen as he recorded every second of the abuse.
"Please... please..." Grace whimpered, her spirit breaking as she realized no one at the bright, colorful party was going to help her. Her beautiful hair was now a jagged, uneven, humiliating mess framing her tear-stained face.
Grandmother tightened her brutal grip on the child's shoulders, her elegant cardigan shifting as she leaned her weight fully onto the eleven-year-old.
"Hold still. It's only hair," Grandmother said. Her voice was incredibly cold, cruel, and completely dismissive of the profound psychological trauma she was inflicting upon her own granddaughter. "It will grow back. Eventually. Now stop crying, you are giving me a headache."
"I want to go home," Grace sobbed, her entire body shaking uncontrollably against the iron chair.
"This is your home," Sabrina sneered, raising the scissors dangerously close to Grace's forehead, preparing to hack away at her front bangs. "We are your family. You should be grateful we take the time to look after you while your pathetic mother scrubs bedpans."
"Don't talk about my mom like that!" Grace yelled, a sudden, desperate surge of defensive anger cutting through her overwhelming terror. She kicked her polished flats violently against Sabrina’s shins.

"You little brat!" Sabrina shrieked, stumbling backward in her expensive trousers.
Before Sabrina could recover and strike the child with the heavy metal scissors, the sound of the heavy wooden garden gate swinging open with a violent, deafening crash shattered the atmosphere of the party. The sudden noise made everyone in the courtyard, including the silent guests who had been pretending not to notice, turn their heads in absolute shock.
