Chapter 4

The bright cinematic colors of the garden seemed to freeze as Grace’s mother stormed through the heavy wooden gate. She was thirty-six years old, exhausted from a twelve-hour shift, wearing faded blue medical scrubs and practical work shoes. Small silver stud earrings and a simple wristwatch were her only adornments. But despite her working-class attire, the sheer, explosive maternal rage radiating from her fair, rosy face made her look like an absolute force of nature.
She took one look at the patio. She saw Grandmother pinning her weeping child to the chair. She saw the uneven, jagged mess of hair falling onto the party dress. And she saw Sabrina holding the sharp silver scissors.
"Mommy!" Grace screamed, a sound of pure, unadulterated relief and lingering terror.
Grace’s mother didn't say a single word. She didn't ask questions. She closed the distance across the manicured lawn with terrifying, blinding speed. Her work shoes tore up the grass as she sprinted toward the iron chair.
Sabrina barely had time to turn her head, her floral blouse catching the bright sunlight, before Grace’s mother was entirely upon her.
Without breaking her stride, Grace’s mother raised her hand and slapped Sabrina squarely across the face with devastating, kinetic force.
The sound of the impact cracked like a gunshot over the silent garden.
Sabrina’s eyes rolled back. The sheer power of the blow knocked the thirty-nine-year-old woman completely off her feet. She spun backward, her heavy jewelry clattering loudly, and crashed hard onto the paved stone of the patio. The scissors flew from her grip, skidding harmlessly across the ground and coming to a stop near the birthday cake.
"Take your hands off my daughter!" Grace’s mother roared, her voice booming with an authoritative, blood-chilling American accent that shook the very leaves of the oak tree above.
Grandmother gasped in absolute shock, her hands instantly flying away from Grace’s shoulders as she stumbled backward in her elegant flats. "Are you insane?! You struck her!"
"If you ever touch her again, I will do a lot worse than strike you," Grace’s mother hissed, stepping directly between the elderly woman and the iron chair.
She turned her back on the wealthy, stunned relatives and immediately dropped to her knees in front of her weeping daughter. Her fierce, furious expression melted instantly into one of profound, heartbreaking tenderness.
"I'm here, baby. Mommy is here," she whispered, her hands gently framing Grace's tear-soaked face. "I've got you. Nobody is going to hurt you anymore."

"They cut it, Mommy," Grace sobbed, burying her face into the soft fabric of the medical scrubs. "They ruined my hair."
"I know, sweetie. I know," her mother murmured, her own eyes filling with tears as she gently ran her fingers over the jagged, unevenly cut strands. The rage in her chest burned hotter than a furnace, but she forced her hands to remain steady as she held her child.
