Chapter 7

The bright, vivid colors of the birthday party suddenly felt like a grotesque, painted mask hiding something utterly foul. The chill from Connor’s terrified whisper sank deep into the bones of Grace’s mother. The first video isn’t the worst one.

She looked down at the digital tablet secured under her arm, the black screen reflecting the bright American sky.

"Connor, what do you mean?" she asked softly, keeping her body angled to shield the boy from the glaring eyes of his relatives. "What else is on here?"

"I can't say it," Connor whimpered, stepping back and wrapping his arms around his own chest. "Just take it to the police. Please. Before she finds out I saw it."

"Connor!" Grandmother’s voice boomed across the patio, devoid of any warmth. The elderly woman stepped forward, her elegant flats clicking ominously against the stone. "You are being ridiculous. You are going to march upstairs to your room immediately. And you," she pointed a trembling, manicured finger at Grace’s mother, "you will hand over my grandson's property right now."

"This property is evidence of a crime," Grace’s mother replied, her voice steady and loud enough for every silent guest to hear. "I am walking out of this gate with my daughter, and I am taking this tablet straight to the precinct."

"You are making a catastrophic mistake!" Sabrina yelled, desperation clawing at her throat. She stepped up beside the Grandmother. "We can settle this financially! How much do you want? Name your price! Fifty thousand? A hundred thousand? You can pay off your nursing school loans!"

"You think you can buy your way out of torturing my child?" Grace’s mother scoffed, her face blazing with absolute disgust.

"I am talking about the other files!" Sabrina shrieked, losing her mind entirely. "The money is for the tablet! You don't know what you are holding!"

The accidental confession hung heavily in the cinematic daylight. Sabrina had just confirmed Connor's warning. There was something on the device far more damaging than a malicious haircut.

Grandmother turned and slapped Sabrina hard across the arm. "Shut your mouth, you foolish girl!"

Grace’s mother felt her heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She tightened her grip on Grace’s hand and secured the tablet tighter under her arm. The dynamic of the confrontation had shifted from a domestic dispute into something highly volatile and incredibly dangerous.

"Bella," Sabrina shouted to the twelve-year-old girl standing frozen by the cake. "Go to the front of the house and tell the security guards to lock the main gates! Do not let her car leave the driveway!"

"Mommy, I'm scared," Grace cried, pulling on her mother's medical scrubs.

"We are leaving right now," Grace’s mother declared. She didn't walk; she backed away toward the wooden garden gate, keeping her eyes locked on the wealthy, desperate women who were now realizing that their entire empire of secrets was about to be walked out their front door.
