Chapter 11

Clara’s terrace became usable again.
For two years I avoided it.
After learning the truth, I avoided it harder.
Then Noah wandered there during a summer visit.
Maria was with him.
I saw from the doorway.
Panic hit before thought.
“Noah.”
Too sharp.
He froze.
I immediately regretted it.
I walked over.
The railing had been fully repaired long ago.
High.
Solid.
Safe.
Noah pointed toward the garden.
“Mommy fall?”
“Yes.”
He looked through the railing.
Not over it.
Then:
“Scary.”
“Yes.”
I crouched.
“Want to go inside?”
He shook his head.
Children surprise you.
He sat on the terrace floor.
I joined him.
Maria stayed nearby.
No ceremony.
Then Noah asked:
“Dad sad?”
“Yes.”
He handed me a small toy dinosaur.
Apparently grief treatment.
I accepted.
We sat five minutes.
The terrace became stone again.
Not crime scene.
Not shrine.
A place where something terrible happened because several adults made bad choices.
Places deserve release too.
Later I had the maintenance team review every railing on every family property.
Marcus heard.
Sent me a message:
I deserved that.
I did not respond.
Maybe he did.
May you like
Maybe maintenance simply needed doing.
Not everything had to be symbolic.
