Chapter 7

I ended the engagement before sunrise.

Victoria removed the ring herself.

Her hands shook.

“Do you think I never loved you?”

I hated that question because the answer was complicated.

“No.”

She looked up.

“I think you did.”

That hurt her more.

Good.

Love does not erase conduct.

Sometimes it makes betrayal harder to understand precisely because both existed.

She had loved Marcus once.

Maybe still in some damaged way.

Then loved me.

Meanwhile Clara’s death sat underneath both relationships like a sealed room.

“You helped raise Noah.”

Victoria nodded, crying.

“He loves you.”

More tears.

“That does not give you the right to control what he can hear.”

“I know.”

Now.

“Or destroy his device.”

“I know.”

“Or lunge at him because he remembers words you regret saying.”

She covered her face.

Done.

No dramatic exile.

No threats.

She left my estate that morning.

No contact with Noah unless he later wanted it and Maria, his specialist, and I believed it safe.

Not because hearing impairment made him fragile.

Because Victoria had specifically used it against him.

Marcus was different.

Business.

Family.

Cousin.

Senior capo.

He expected a beating.

Maybe worse.

I denied him the theater.

“You’re done speaking for me.”

His face changed.

Every role connecting his voice to mine ended.

No family negotiations.

No representing my decisions.

No private authority at the estate.

He remained cousin.

Nothing more automatic.

“You’re stripping twenty years over an accident?”

“No.”

I leaned closer.

“I’m stripping them over two years of lying to my face after the accident.”

Silence.

“And because tonight you argued about my dead wife beside my son because you assumed his disability made him irrelevant.”

That landed.

Good.

Marcus always valued strength.

Now he had to hear what he had actually done.

He treated a child as furniture.
