Chapter 16

Three years after the broken hearing aid, Noah started school.

He was six.

His hearing support had improved.

He spoke confidently.

Still wore a device.

First day, another child asked:

“What’s that?”

Noah answered:

“My hearing aid.”

Then apparently added:

“It helps me hear secrets.”

Maria nearly died laughing when the teacher repeated it.

I did too.

Dark humor inherited early.

We corrected him gently.

“No eavesdropping.”

He looked innocent.

Dangerous.

That evening he asked:

“Victoria broke first one?”

“Yes.”

“Because secret?”

“Yes.”

“Do you hate her?”

I thought carefully.

“No.”

He stared.

“Why?”

Because hate was too easy.

Because I had loved her.

Because anger remained.

Because people change.

Because none of that restored trust.

I said:

“I don’t want her close enough to hurt you again.”

That he understood.

“You can not hate and still no?”

Exactly.

“Yes.”

Children reduce years of therapy to grammar.

Not hate.

May you like

Still no.

Perfect.
