Chapter 9

Marcus requested to see me three months later.

I accepted.

He looked older.

Loss of rank does that faster than time.

“I want to tell you something you haven’t asked.”

I almost refused.

Then listened.

The terrace railing.

The open section had not simply been under repair.

Marcus had ordered the decorative panel removed earlier that day.

Why?

Not for Clara.

A photographer was scheduled to take engagement—no, this was before engagement. A family portrait? Let's make it a villa renovation event.

He wanted the rusted piece replaced before a donor dinner.

Workers removed it.

The replacement had not arrived.

A temporary barrier was supposed to be installed.

Marcus forgot to confirm.

My breathing slowed.

“So the opening existed because of you.”

“Yes.”

Another layer.

Not murder.

Negligence.

He had lived with that too.

“Did Victoria know?”

“No.”

Good.

One fact she had not hidden.

Marcus continued.

When Clara stepped onto the terrace, he saw the open section.

That was why he followed quickly.

He feared she might back toward it.

He called:

“Clara, stop.”

She thought he meant stop leaving.

She stepped farther away.

Then slipped.

He had replayed that second every night.

Why not tell me?

Because now his responsibility multiplied.

Affair.

Pursuit.

Missing barrier.

Lie afterward.

Each truth made the next confession harder.

He looked at me.

“I kept thinking if the fall was an accident, the rest didn’t matter.”

Wrong.

“The accident is exactly why the rest matters.”

He nodded.

Good.

Clara’s death was not a murder puzzle.

It was a chain of preventable choices.

Affair.

Lie.

Pursuit.

Wet terrace.

Missing barrier.

Silence.

No single villainous hand.

That made it harder to hate cleanly.

Maybe healthier.

Reality does not owe us one person to blame.
