Chapter 3

Marcus called me after Clara fell.
I remembered every word.
“Rocco, come upstairs.”
His voice had sounded wrong.
I arrived.
Clara was below.
Staff already running.
Victoria nowhere visible.
Marcus told me he found Clara after hearing a crash.
That lie survived two years.
“Where was Victoria?”
I asked.
Marcus looked at her.
She answered:
“In the linen room.”
Hiding.
Of course.
While people gathered around Clara, Victoria slipped through an interior corridor.
Why?
Not because she feared being blamed for murder.
Because if anyone knew she had been there with Marcus, the affair would surface.
My wife was dying below us, and their first shared decision was to preserve their secret.
I felt something inside me turn cold.
“Did Clara speak?”
Marcus looked away.
That hurt before he answered.
“Yes.”
My hands tightened.
“What did she say?”
“Your name.”
I stopped breathing.
Then:
“And Noah.”
Nothing else.
No accusation.
No Victoria.
No Marcus.
Just husband and child.
Clara lost consciousness before I reached her.
She died hours later.
I sat beside her bed believing the rain took her.
Marcus stood behind me.
Victoria came later pretending she had only just heard.
She hugged me.
That memory became unbearable.
“You touched me.”
Victoria cried harder.
“I loved you too.”
Wrong sentence.
I looked at her.
“Too?”
She froze.
There.
Not past tense.
Complexity she had not intended to reveal.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You think she chose me?”
Victoria turned.
“Shut up.”
Good.
Alliance fracturing.
I asked:
“What does that mean?”
Marcus looked at me.
“After Clara died, Victoria ended it.”
Interesting.
Not because guilt transformed her morally.
Because Marcus became a reminder.
She distanced herself.
Months later, she began spending time around me.
Helping with Noah.
Like Clara once trusted her to.
Marcus hated it.
But he kept quiet because exposing Victoria exposed himself.
Their shared guilt became mutual leverage.
Then Victoria and I fell in love.
At least I thought we did.
Marcus started demanding she stop.
She refused.
He threatened to tell me.
She reminded him his career survived because I believed he found Clara after the fall rather than helped create the situation.
Perfect prison.
Two adults tied together by one dead woman.

Then Noah heard them arguing about it at my engagement party.
A child with a hearing aid broke a secret two adults maintained for two years.
