Chapter 1

“My son can’t breathe… and you tied him up so your favorite grandchild could hurt him.”

My mother did not answer.

That silence told me more than denial.

Behind me, two bodyguards moved toward Caleb.

I raised a hand.

“Ask him first.”

They stopped.

Caleb was eighteen.

His intellectual disability meant he sometimes needed more time to understand fast, stressful situations. It did not mean strangers got to decide what happened to his body because they believed they were helping.

I crouched beside him.

“Caleb, Marco and Elias can help you stand. Is that okay?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Only then did they touch him.

He leaned heavily against Marco, breathing shallowly.

Mason stood near the ruined chess table staring at the carpet.

Bianca pressed one hand against her face where my punch had landed.

Vincent remained beside the doorway.

Francesca stood straight.

Still composed.

That frightened me.

Then Caleb looked at her.

“Grandma.”

She met his eyes.

“I said stop.”

The room changed.

Not because anyone learned something new.

Because he said it clearly enough that nobody could hide behind misunderstanding.

Francesca whispered:

“You were upset.”

Caleb frowned.

“I was hurt.”

Simple.

Precise.

She looked away.

I turned toward Bianca.

“You said Mason’s future mattered.”

Her jaw tightened.

“What future?”

Silence.

Mason suddenly spoke.

“Mom.”

Bianca snapped:

“Don’t.”

I looked at him.

“Mason, you’re twenty. You can answer for yourself.”

That mattered too.

He was not a child being used as a shield.

He swallowed.

“Grandma said everyone needed to see.”

“See what?”

He looked at Caleb.

Then at me.

“That he can’t stop me.”

My body became completely still.

Francesca closed her eyes.

Too late.

I stepped closer.

“Why would anyone need to see that?”

Mason answered before his mother could.

“Because she said if something happens to you, somebody has to control him.”

There it was.

Not succession.

Something uglier.

May you like

They were not trying to prove Mason deserved the Romano chair.

They were trying to establish that Caleb required a master.
