Chapter 16

Vincent apologized to Caleb privately.

I heard about it later.

Caleb told me at breakfast.

“Grandpa cried.”

“What did he say?”

“He said he blocked the door because he listened to Grandma instead of me.”

Accurate.

“What did you say?”

“I said don’t do again.”

Simple.

“Anything else?”

Caleb ate toast.

“I asked if he wants to see the new horse.”

Of course.

Vincent started volunteering at the stable twice a week.

No title.

No patriarch chair.

Just old man carrying feed badly and getting corrected by his grandson.

I visited once.

Caleb pointed toward the bucket.

“Grandpa, not that one.”

Vincent immediately changed buckets.

I almost laughed.

Five years earlier he had blocked a doorway while others decided Caleb needed to learn obedience.

Now he followed Caleb’s instructions about horses without humiliation.

Authority became contextual.

As it should.
