Chapter 4

The old Romano expectation was not written anywhere.

That made it more dangerous.

When a senior family member had a disabled adult child, another relative was informally designated as a “protector.”

Nothing sinister in theory.

Help with travel.

Explain meetings.

Watch for manipulation.

Assist with complicated decisions if requested.

Some families had used the role honorably.

Others turned it into authority.

Francesca wanted Mason publicly recognized as Caleb’s protector.

Without asking Caleb.

Without asking me.

Why?

Because if enough capos accepted the relationship socially, it would become reality through habit.

Mason sits beside him.

Mason answers questions first.

Mason reviews money.

Mason decides which meetings are “too stressful.”

Eventually nobody asks Caleb.

Not because any rule says they cannot.

Because people become comfortable with the shortcut.

I knew exactly how power disappeared inside families.

Quietly.

Politely.

For someone’s own good.

“What was tonight supposed to prove?”

Vincent looked ashamed now.

Francesca did not.

“That Caleb freezes under pressure.”

I stared.

“You tied him to a chair.”

She said nothing.

“You had a larger man hit him.”

Nothing.

“Then expected his reaction to prove he cannot handle pressure.”

Her eyes lowered.

There.

The test had been designed to manufacture the result.

If Caleb cried:

Too fragile.

If he panicked:

Too unstable.

If he fought back:

Too unpredictable.

If he froze:

Too dependent.

There was no passing condition.

I looked at Mason.

“Did you know that?”

He looked sick.

“No.”

I believed him.

He had been told something simpler.

Make Caleb submit.

Show the older men he could keep control.

Still terrible.

But not the entire architecture.

Bianca knew more.

Her silence told me.

I looked at my sister.

“How long have you known?”

She whispered:

“Since spring.”

Six months.

May you like

Six months of family dinners where she smiled at my son while helping build a future where he would be managed by hers.

That hurt differently from the slap.
