Chapter 9

Caleb asked to speak at the family council.
Everyone panicked except me.
He had never requested it before.
“Why?”
he said.
Because I want them to hear me.
Good enough.
We prepared together.
Not a speech written for him.
Questions.
Simple language.
Breaks if needed.
Tess, his longtime support worker, attended only because he asked her to.
He entered the council room wearing a navy shirt he had chosen himself.
Sat beside me.
Not behind.
Gordon and Rafael were present as observers.
Francesca was not.
Caleb looked around.
Then said:
“I know I need help with some things.”
Silence.
“I don’t understand contracts fast.”
True.
“I get upset when too many people talk.”
True.
“I don’t drive.”
True.
Then:
“I know when somebody hurts me.”
No one moved.
“I know when I say no.”
His voice shook slightly.
“I know Mason is my cousin, not my boss.”
There.
Perfect.
Not eloquent.
Clear.
Then he looked at Gordon.
“You saw me say stop.”
Gordon lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you help?”
No answer.
Caleb waited.
Good.
Gordon eventually said:
“I thought your grandmother knew better.”
Caleb frowned.
“Better than me?”
That question changed the room.
Gordon swallowed.
May you like
“No.”
Progress.
