Chapter 10

Rosalind’s apology took longer.
Because hers was more complicated.
She had not merely followed Sebastian.
She wanted something.
A place.
A title.
A family shape where she stopped feeling like an outsider.
Months later she asked to speak with me.
Neutral sitting room.
No engagement jewelry.
She looked smaller without performance.
“I hated Nell.”
“I know.”
“Not because of her.”
“I know.”
“Because Clara reached for her.”
There.
Truth.
She had interpreted a child’s comfort as ranking.
Every time Clara wanted Nell after a nightmare, Rosalind felt rejected.
Instead of accepting that safety can have many faces, she tried to reduce the competition.
I said:
“You turned love into a hierarchy.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Then:
“I thought if she called me Mom once, I’d finally feel real.”
I stared.
“And when she didn’t?”
“I kept thinking the next time would fix it.”
That is how coercion grows.
One more try.
One more question.
One more dinner.
Until someone else is carrying the cost.
She asked whether I had ever loved her.
“Yes.”
She cried.
“Do you still?”
I thought.
“Parts.”
Accurate.
Then:
“That doesn’t make marriage safe.”
She closed her eyes.
Good.
No false hope.
May you like
No cruelty.
Just truth.
