Chapter 13

Sebastian lost his place slowly.
Not family.
Authority.
He remained my uncle.
That distinction mattered.
No children’s matters.
No household decisions.
No control over family access.
No ability to act as broker between relatives.
He hated that last one most.
For years people came to him asking:
Will Adrian approve?
Can Margaret visit?
Should Rosalind move rooms?
Can Vincent attend?
Sebastian answered before anyone asked me.
Power built from interpretation.
I removed the middleman.
People spoke directly.
Messier.
Healthier.
Then one day Sebastian asked to see Clara.
I said:
“Ask her.”
His face changed.
“She’s five.”
“Exactly.”
He did.
Clara said no.
That was the meeting.

He survived.
Important lesson.
