Chapter 17

Eight years after Nell stopped my hand over the service bell, we held another formal dinner beneath the same chandeliers.

Clara was twelve.

Nell sat beside me.

Not in uniform.

Not replacing anyone.

Just Nell.

My partner.

The silver bell rested near Clara’s plate.

She picked it up.

Rang once.

Every adult at the table looked toward her.

She grinned.

“Cake.”

Rafe sighed.

The kitchen doors opened.

Dessert arrived.

Nothing else happened.

No west garden escort.

No greenhouse recording.

No adults waiting to coach her answers.

No dead mother invoked.

No hypothetical brother measured against her.

Just cake.

Clara looked at me.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m allowed.”

“Creepy.”

Nell laughed.

I accepted the insult.

Years earlier, that bell had become a secret signal because everyone understood the dining room would look one direction while a child was moved another.

That was the real trick.

Not the bell.

Distraction.

Family tradition gave people a respectable thing to watch while control happened somewhere quieter.

Rosalind watched legitimacy.

Sebastian watched succession.

Margaret watched access.

Everett watched influence.

Vincent watched promotion.

Nobody watched Clara.

Nell did.

That was why she stopped my hand.

Not because she was braver than everyone in every way.

Because she was looking at the child instead of the structure.

Clara rang the bell again.

“More cake.”

“No.”

Nell said:

“Yes.”

I looked at her.

She smiled.

Terrible discipline.

Excellent life.

Clara laughed.

The sound traveled through the ballroom.

No one flinched.

No one disappeared.

No one waited in the garden.

May you like

The bell finally meant exactly what I had always believed it meant.

Dessert.
