Chapter 14

Nell and I became closer gradually.
I hated the cliché before it even existed.
Widowed Mafia boss.
Beautiful housemaid.
No.
I refused to make gratitude romantic.
For months I changed nothing.
Then one night after Clara’s birthday, Nell found me putting the service bell in a drawer.
“Why hide it?”
“I’m tired of looking at it.”
She leaned against the doorway.
“Clara isn’t.”
Fair.
I left it out.
Then she said:
“You avoid me.”
“I don’t.”
“You do.”
I sighed.
Nell smiled.
Dangerous.
I told her the truth.
“I care about you in a way that would make your job unfair if I acted on it carelessly.”
She stared.
Then:
“That’s the most complicated invitation to dinner I’ve ever heard.”
I almost laughed.
“Wasn’t an invitation.”
“Shame.”
That was the beginning.
Slow.
Private.
No role change for Clara.
No calling Nell mother.
No replacing Evelyn.

No symbolic household elevation.
Just two adults seeing what existed when power was handled carefully.
