Chapter 10

Howard opened the old legal archive.

The original memorandum was written ten years earlier.

Before Leo.

Before Lorenzo became boss.

Before Lorenzo’s father, Antonio Moretti, died.

Antonio had observed his son for years.

Brilliant.

Loyal.

Protective.

And terrifying when someone touched family.

The memo said:

Lorenzo will become stronger than I was.

That is exactly why he will require limits I never accepted for myself.

Lorenzo read the sentence twice.

His throat tightened.

Howard continued.

Antonio had asked for a family-event safeguard.

Not because he expected Lorenzo to become cruel.

Because he feared Lorenzo would always find a loving reason for excessive retaliation.

Lorenzo discovered the draft years later after Leo’s birth.

He believed the idea was his own because Howard had removed Antonio’s name at Dominic’s request.

Dominic’s face fell.

Lorenzo looked at him.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why hide it?”

Dominic’s voice came quietly.

“Because you hated your father’s control.”

Lorenzo’s breathing sharpened.

“You thought I wouldn't sign if I knew it came from him.”

“Yes.”

Another manipulation disguised as wisdom.

But that was not the major twist.

Howard placed a second file down.

Six months earlier, Marcus discovered the original memo during legal due diligence.

He immediately understood what it could do.

He went to Evelyn.

Then Dominic.

Then Caleb.

But Marcus had not simply found a weapon.

He had found a warning that was already partly true.

Over the previous two years, Lorenzo had repeatedly crossed lines when Leo was involved.

A driver hospitalized after negligence.

A rival beaten after threatening to photograph Leo.

A school administrator forced from a job after mishandling a security breach.

Some actions were defensible.

Some were not.

Dominic had quietly cleaned up consequences each time.

Caleb had altered reports.

Howard had settled claims.

Everyone around Lorenzo kept preventing him from seeing the pattern.

Marcus saw it.

And weaponized it.

That was the deeper betrayal.

Marcus could build the trap only because Lorenzo’s closest men had spent years hiding the evidence that made the trap believable.

Dominic lowered his eyes.

Caleb looked toward the floor.

Howard removed his glasses.

Lorenzo stared at the three men.

“You protected me.”

No one answered.

His voice became rougher.

“You protected me until somebody could use what you hid.”

Dominic swallowed.

“Yes.”

The word hurt.

Marcus smiled faintly.

For a moment, he thought the room had turned.

Then Howard opened one final file.

“But Marcus made one mistake.”

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

Howard slid forward the agreement with Ramires.

“This converts the suspension from governance into conspiracy.”

Marcus’s face changed.

The clause could legally suspend Lorenzo for review.

It could not transfer assets or routes.

Marcus’s outside deal proved he had planned to use the safeguard for personal power.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Dominic looked at Marcus.

Howard continued.

“And there’s more.”

Ramires had required proof Marcus could control the council.

Marcus sent him confidential vote commitments.

Names.

Amounts.

Promises.

One signature belonged to Evelyn.

Forged.

She stared at it.

Marcus had never intended to share temporary power with his wife.

Once Lorenzo fell—

Evelyn was next.
