Chapter 4

The security chief was gone.

Not off the property.

Gone from his office.

Laptop missing.

Access card disabled.

Anthony found the desk drawer open.

No forced entry.

Lorenzo stood in the doorway.

His eyes moved across the empty room.

“Name.”

Anthony looked uncomfortable.

“Caleb Mercer.”

Caleb had protected Leo since infancy.

He knew the child’s allergies.

His nap schedule.

Which stuffed dinosaur stayed in the SUV.

Lorenzo’s face tightened.

Another close circle.

Another betrayal.

Security logs showed Caleb repositioned two pool cameras early that morning.

He claimed it was for birthday coverage.

Then he created the upload pathway to the council server.

He had also approved the photographer.

Marcus paid the photographer through a private event company.

The pieces connected.

But Caleb had not left the estate gates.

Anthony found him in the equipment house.

Sitting.

Waiting.

When Lorenzo entered, Caleb looked up.

No arrogance.

No fear either.

Just resignation.

“You knew I’d find you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why run from your office?”

“I didn't want anyone touching my files before outside counsel arrived.”

That answer surprised Lorenzo.

Caleb slid a folder across the table.

Inside were incident reports.

Most involved Lorenzo.

A warehouse confrontation.

A restaurant beating.

A security guard hospitalized after insulting Leo’s late mother.

A driver threatened after leaving Leo unattended for three minutes.

Lorenzo read in silence.

Some reports were accurate.

Others exaggerated.

But not all.

Caleb’s voice stayed measured.

“You've gotten more dangerous since becoming a father.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“Careful.”

Caleb’s eyes did not move.

“There.”

One word.

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

Caleb continued.

“That look. Everybody knows it.”

Anthony shifted near the door.

Caleb glanced at him.

“Tell him.”

Anthony said nothing.

Lorenzo slowly looked at his bodyguard.

“What?”

Anthony’s breathing changed.

“Some men are afraid to report mistakes involving Leo.”

The sentence landed.

Lorenzo’s hands became still.

“Because?”

Anthony’s eyes lowered.

“Because they think you’ll punish fear before you investigate facts.”

Marcus and Evelyn had exploited something real.

That made them more dangerous, not less.

Lorenzo turned back to Caleb.

“You helped stage today.”

“I helped document it.”

“You moved cameras.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Marcus would provoke me.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Evelyn would hit Leo?”

Caleb’s face hardened.

“No.”

Lorenzo believed him.

Then Caleb added:

“I saw her whisper to Marcus fifteen minutes before it happened.”

“What?”

“She said the argument wasn't enough.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

Caleb continued.

“Marcus told her not to touch the kid.”

A new fracture opened.

Marcus had planned provocation.

Evelyn escalated it.

On her own.

Then Caleb removed one final document.

“She had another reason.”

Lorenzo took it.

A financial notice.

Evelyn’s private foundation account would lose access to nearly twelve million dollars under Lorenzo’s restructuring plan.

Effective next month.

Her cruelty toward Leo had not only been ideological.

She had money to lose.
