Chapter 5

Evelyn stopped smiling when Lorenzo placed the notice in front of her.
Her eyes moved across the first page.
Then toward Marcus.
“You told him?”
Marcus stared at her.
“I didn't know.”
That answer mattered.
Evelyn had hidden money from her husband too.
Lorenzo sat opposite them.
The pool party had been cleared.
Leo remained upstairs with a pediatrician and nanny.
No children were anywhere near the room.
Lorenzo kept it that way.
“What is the twelve million?”
Evelyn folded the paper.
“Foundation reserves.”
“For what?”
“Family obligations.”
“Whose?”
Her lips tightened.
Lorenzo waited.
The silence stretched.
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Answer him.”
She turned sharply.
“Don’t order me.”
The first visible crack in their marriage.
Lorenzo watched.
Evelyn had run donor events for years.
She arranged scholarships, hospital payments, funeral support, and emergency housing for families connected to the Morettis.
People loved her.
Needed her.
Lorenzo had recently ordered those funds moved under independent trustees after auditors found inconsistent records.
Evelyn interpreted it as humiliation.
“You were taking my work.”
“I was auditing money.”
“You were taking control.”
Her voice rose.
Then she caught herself.
Lorenzo’s eyes stayed on her.
There.
The motive beneath the language.
Not only money.
Identity.
Power.
For a decade, Evelyn became important because people had to come to her for help.
Lorenzo’s reform would make support automatic.
Transparent.
No favors.
No personal gratitude.
She would lose the dependency network around her.
Marcus leaned forward.
“You told me this was about his leadership.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“It is.”
“Then why hide the accounts?”
Her breathing sharpened.
“Because you would have panicked.”
Marcus laughed once.
“You slapped his son in front of fifty people.”
Her eyes flashed.
“And it worked.”
The room went still.
Lorenzo’s expression became frighteningly calm.
Evelyn realized what she had said.
Too late.
She lowered her voice.
“You hit both of us.”
Lorenzo leaned forward.
“You planned to make me.”
Her eyes held his.
“Yes.”
No apology.
No shame.
At least not yet.
She believed she had proved her point.
Then Claire Morgan, the forensic accountant, entered.
She placed three ledgers on the table.
“The twelve million isn't missing.”
Evelyn relaxed slightly.
Claire continued.
“But four million was redirected into companies controlled by Marcus.”
Evelyn turned.
Marcus’s face emptied.
Lorenzo saw it.
So did she.
Her voice became quieter.
“What companies?”
Claire named three.
Marcus stopped breathing on the second.
Evelyn slowly looked at her husband.
May you like
The money she had hidden to preserve her power—
Marcus had been stealing from underneath her.
