Chapter 9

Marcus stopped pretending.

Not completely.

Enough.

“The tag was for timing.”

Lorenzo’s eyes stayed on him.

“Timing what?”

“The recording.”

“You marked my son.”

“It was a cupcake.”

Lorenzo’s expression did not change.

That frightened Marcus.

“It was a cupcake attached to my child.”

Marcus exhaled sharply.

“Don't make it sound worse.”

Lorenzo leaned forward.

“You don't get to edit the sentence.”

Silence.

Claire traced the tag purchase.

Event-security vendor.

Paid through Caleb Mercer’s department.

Caleb looked sick when confronted.

Marcus had told him the tag would coordinate photography.

Caleb believed the confrontation involved adults.

Again, Marcus compartmentalized the plan.

Nobody saw the whole thing except him.

Almost.

Dominic asked:

“Who designed the council timing?”

Marcus looked at him.

“You helped.”

“I signed.”

Dominic’s voice hardened.

“That isn't what I asked.”

Marcus said nothing.

Lorenzo watched.

Dominic repeated:

“Who told you the suspension clause could be triggered before the party ended?”

Marcus’s eyes shifted.

Evelyn noticed.

“So there’s someone else.”

Marcus’s breathing slowed.

Lorenzo felt the room tighten.

There was.

Claire examined the petition metadata.

The first draft did not come from Marcus.

It came from an account belonging to Moretti family counsel.

The senior lawyer, Howard Bell, had worked for Lorenzo’s father.

He had drafted the original governance clause four years earlier.

Lorenzo called him.

No answer.

Anthony found Howard’s car still parked at the estate.

The lawyer was inside the guest office.

Waiting.

Like Caleb had.

Howard looked tired when Lorenzo entered.

His tie had been removed.

A half-finished drink sat untouched.

“You drafted the petition.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“Before today.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Howard looked toward Dominic.

Then Lorenzo.

“Because the clause was never supposed to protect you.”

Lorenzo’s expression changed.

Howard continued.

“It was supposed to protect the family from whoever became boss.”

Lorenzo stared.

“I wrote it.”

“You signed it.”

Howard’s breathing deepened.

“Your father wrote the first version.”

Lorenzo stopped.

His father had been dead six years.

Howard continued.

“He knew exactly what power did to men in this family.”

The clause Lorenzo believed was his own moral safeguard—

had actually begun as a warning from the previous boss about him.
