Chapter 3

Dominic did not run.
That hurt more.
He walked into Lorenzo’s library twenty minutes later wearing the same charcoal suit he had worn to Leo’s birthday.
No attorney.
No bodyguard.
He closed the door behind himself.
Lorenzo stood near the window.
His arms were loose at his sides.
Dominic knew him well enough to recognize the danger in that.
Still, he came closer.
“You signed it.”
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
Lorenzo’s eyes stayed on his face.
“Look at me when you say it.”
Dominic did.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Lorenzo’s breathing slowed until it barely moved his chest.
“Why?”
Dominic rubbed his thumb against the edge of his wedding band.
“You asked me to.”
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
“When?”
“Four years ago.”
Dominic removed an envelope from his jacket.
Lorenzo recognized his own handwriting.
The seal was his.
Inside was a signed governance instruction.
If Lorenzo ever used violence against relatives during a protected family event in front of children, Dominic had authority to trigger an emergency leadership review.
Lorenzo remembered writing it.
The memory came back slowly.
His father had once beaten a cousin during a baptism dinner.
Children watched.
Everyone pretended nothing happened because the boss was untouchable.
Lorenzo had sworn his own authority would never become that.
Then Leo was born.
He made Dominic promise.
“If I ever start believing protecting my child means every reaction becomes justified, stop me.”
Dominic’s eyes were wet now.
“You said that.”
Lorenzo looked down at the paper.
Then toward the pool outside.
He had struck Marcus.
Struck Evelyn.
Threatened them in front of family.
The fact they deserved consequences did not erase what Dominic had been ordered to do.
Lorenzo whispered:
“You knew they were going to provoke me.”
Dominic’s breathing caught.
There.
The real betrayal.
“Did you?”
Dominic looked away.
Lorenzo’s hand tightened.
“Answer me.”
“Yes.”
A quiet word.
Heavy enough to change twenty-two years.
Dominic continued quickly.
“I was told there would be an argument.”
“Leo?”
“No.”
His voice sharpened with genuine emotion.
“Never Leo.”
Lorenzo stared at him.
Dominic’s hands opened.
“They told me Marcus would challenge you publicly. Evelyn would insult your decisions. They wanted to see whether you could walk away.”
Lorenzo’s eyes became cold.
“And when they hit my son?”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“I didn't know.”
“But you still signed.”
Dominic looked at him.
His voice dropped.
“Because you still did exactly what they predicted.”
The words hurt because they were partly true.
Then Lorenzo noticed something.
Dominic had said they.
Not Marcus.
Not Evelyn.
“They?”
Dominic’s face changed.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Who else planned this?”
Dominic swallowed.
Then said:
“The person who repositioned the estate cameras wasn't Marcus.”
Lorenzo waited.
May you like
Dominic looked toward the door.
“It was someone inside your own security command.”
