Chapter 10

Sybilla did not deny promising Graham the role.

She thought it harmless.

That phrase again.

“We were getting married.”

“Yes.”

“I would live here.”

“Yes.”

“I needed people I trusted.”

“You needed to discuss it.”

She looked frustrated.

“With you?”

I almost laughed.

“Yes, Sybilla. With the man whose household you were reorganizing.”

Silence.

She had grown up differently.

In her family, engagement meant gradual merger.

Staff loyalties shifted.

Rooms reassigned.

Security combined.

No one waited for vows.

To her, she was preparing.

To me, she was annexing.

That difference should have been discussed months ago.

It wasn’t.

Our fault together.

Then I asked about Estelle.

Why her?

Sybilla looked ashamed.

“She annoyed me.”

Simple.

“How?”

“She answered her phone during fittings.”

There.

A working mother receiving calls.

That was enough to mark her as insufficiently obedient.

Then:

“She once told me she couldn’t stay late because of Lucy.”

I stared.

“And?”

“I thought she was using the child as an excuse.”

Of course.

Because Sybilla had never needed to choose between childcare pickup and keeping a job.

Privilege often interprets constraints as attitude.

Then she said:

“I didn’t know Graham planned to use her.”

“No.”

I believed that.

“You still made using her easier.”

That landed.

She had created a household culture around herself where Estelle’s needs were irritations.

So when Graham needed a disposable employee, he chose the woman Sybilla already treated as disposable.

No command required.

Values travel downward.
