Chapter 13

Martin and Graham lost access to both families.

No violence.

No dungeon.

No theatrical punishment.

Work ended.

Networks closed.

References honest.

They would live.

Just without borrowing my authority or Alistair’s.

Martin called that economic execution.

Dramatic.

He was talented.

He found work eventually.

Smaller firm.

No access to private families.

Probably healthier.

Graham surprised me.

He asked for a meeting six months later.

Not job.

Apology.

First to Estelle.

She declined.

Fine.

Then me.

“You were right.”

I almost sent him away for lack of originality.

“About?”

“We never asked.”

There.

The door back.

He and Martin had built an entire revenge structure around being permanently excluded.

Neither had ever asked what restitution would require.

Maybe I would have said no.

Maybe not.

They preferred certainty of resentment over risk of rejection.

Human.

Graham asked:

“Would you ever hire me again?”

“No.”

He accepted it.

Good.

“Can I still rebuild?”

“Yes.”

Different.

Forgiveness is not reinstatement.

People confuse those because power makes relationships look like positions.

I had too sometimes.
