Chapter 11

The engagement ended.

Not because Graham planned a fake affair.

Not because Alistair staged a security breach.

Because Sybilla and I finally understood we had never defined what marriage meant operationally.

She thought joining me meant joining authority.

I thought marrying her meant partnership without automatic power.

Both assumed.

Dangerous.

She removed the ring herself.

“What now?”

“I don’t know.”

She nodded.

No dramatic plea.

Good.

Alistair reacted worse.

“You’re letting the Pells destroy your marriage.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“They exposed cracks.”

Difference.

Then I turned toward his own problem.

His staged breach had still happened.

Even without the Pells.

He intended to secretly restrain me inside my own room to prove his company deserved more influence.

That was betrayal.

Polished.

Professional.

Still betrayal.

He lost all security access to Rookwood.

No merger recommendation.

No shared personnel.

He called it retaliation.

I called it boundary.

Then something surprising happened.

He apologized.

Not immediately.

Three days later.

“For the test.”

Specific.

“I believed if I proved your men inadequate, you’d thank me later.”

There it was.

Paternal arrogance from a man not even my father.

He genuinely thought violating trust could be justified by a useful result.

Martin Pell learned that philosophy working for him.

Again.

People inherit methods from employers as easily as family.
