Chapter 15

Alistair’s merger failed.
Not because I sabotaged it.
Because internal review exposed weak controls around his staged exercises.
Interesting.
His company survived.
Smaller.
He stepped back from operations.
For a man who built identity around preventing vulnerability, losing command nearly destroyed him.
Then maybe improved him.
He started teaching.
Actual security principles.
No manufactured crises.
One afternoon he visited me.
Permission requested first.
Progress.
He said:
“I trained Martin to believe every weakness must be demonstrated dramatically.”
“Yes.”
“And Sybilla too.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He sighed.
“I thought fear made lessons stick.”
“Sometimes.”
He looked surprised.
I continued.
“Doesn’t mean the lesson is the one you intended.”
That sat between us.
Estelle learned powerful people could destroy her property.
Sybilla learned authority meant controlling rooms.
Martin learned manufactured threats created demand.
Alistair intended discipline.
He created habits.
That is the problem with fear.
May you like
It teaches efficiently.
Just not always correctly.
