Chapter 9

We found Graham before sunrise.
He was not fleeing the city.
He was sitting in a roadside diner ten miles away.
Waiting.
He knew Martin had spoken.
Good.
I went alone except for Elias.
No spectacle.
Graham looked exhausted.
“Boss.”
I sat.
“Why stay?”
“Because running makes me guilty.”
“You are guilty.”
He smiled faintly.
“Fair.”
Then he surprised me.
He had not planned to destroy Estelle’s life permanently.
Of course.
Everyone in these plans imagines temporary suffering.
She would be accused.
Maybe suspended.
Then later evidence could surface clearing her.
After the engagement collapsed.
After Vane’s reputation broke.
After the Pell brothers were positioned to “discover” manipulation.
They would restore Estelle too.
Heroes.
I stared.
“You planned her rescue as part of your own reputation.”
“Yes.”
At least honest.
“Did you ever ask what three weeks of being called my mistress would do to her?”
Silence.
“Or to her daughter?”
Nothing.
He had thought in stages.
Not people.
Then:
“Why me?”
Graham looked down.
“You removed Martin without giving him a path back.”
Interesting.
“He sold access.”
“He admitted it.”
“And?”
“You made one mistake permanent.”
There.
This was about consequence.
Graham believed families should allow rehabilitation.
Maybe he was right generally.
But instead of arguing, he built revenge.
“Did Martin ask to come back?”
“No.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Important.
They resented a closed door they never knocked on.
Pride again.
Then Graham said:
“There’s another reason.”
Of course.
He had been promised head of joint household security after my marriage.
By Sybilla.
I looked at him.
“When?”
“Two months ago.”
That changed her role again.
She had been cultivating Graham independently.
Why?
Because she wanted loyal household staff after marriage.
Not malicious necessarily.
Political.
But she promised roles without telling me.
Another assumption that my house would become shared territory automatically.
Graham saw opportunity.
When Martin proposed the larger plan, Graham already had access.
May you like
Sybilla unknowingly opened the door.
Literally and otherwise.
