Chapter 1

Vincent did not watch the second video in the ballroom.

That was the first decision he made correctly that night.

The second was taking the scissors out of the room before four-year-old Emma had to look at them again.

The birthday gala ended immediately.

Guests were escorted from the hotel ballroom.

Marcus and Bianca remained with attorneys and security.

Nobody was dragged into a basement.

Nobody disappeared.

Vincent had more important things to do.

Emma sat inside a private hotel suite with a pediatrician checking her scalp.

The braid had been cut close to the side of her head, but the scissors had not broken the skin.

Physically, she was fine.

Emotionally, she was not.

Every few minutes Emma touched the uneven hair and started crying again.

“Can you put it back?”

Vincent sat beside her.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Tomorrow?”

“No.”

Her lip trembled.

“Why?”

He looked toward Emma Brooks.

The twenty-four-year-old housekeeper stood near the bedroom door with tears in her eyes.

Vincent could explain scissors.

Hair.

Growth.

He could not explain why a grown woman had decided a four-year-old deserved humiliation at her own birthday party.

“It’ll grow again.”

Emma looked down at the severed braid resting inside a clear evidence bag.

“I liked it.”

“I know.”

“Ruby liked it.”

Vincent looked up.

That name mattered.

Ruby was Bianca’s seven-year-old daughter.

She had been standing only a few feet away when Bianca cut Emma’s hair.

After the fight, Ruby refused to leave with her mother.

She was now in another suite with a female security officer and a hotel child-care worker while attorneys figured out the safest next step.

Vincent asked:

“Where’s Leo?”

Emma Brooks answered.

“With Rebecca.”

Rebecca Sloan had arrived twenty minutes earlier.

She handled Vincent’s legitimate legal matters and had already taken possession of Leo’s tablet.

The boy was sitting with her and his father in a separate room.

No one had asked him to replay anything.

No one had asked him to explain the videos repeatedly.

Vincent had learned enough from other family disasters to understand one rule.

Children were not evidence machines.

The adults would preserve what Leo had already recorded.

They would build the rest themselves.

Emma Brooks stepped closer.

“There’s something you need to know.”

Vincent looked at her.

“About Bianca?”

“About Ruby.”

His expression changed.

Emma Brooks had worked for the estate since she was nineteen.

Leo trusted her.

Emma trusted her.

Ruby had increasingly sought her out too.

“What?”

“For the last month, Ruby’s been asking if she can stay near me whenever Bianca visits.”

Vincent frowned.

“Why?”

“She wouldn’t say at first.”

“And now?”

Emma Brooks looked toward the adjoining room where little Emma was changing into pajamas.

“Last week she asked me if mothers were allowed to hit their daughters when they embarrassed them.”

Vincent went completely still.

“Did you tell anyone?”

“I tried.”

The answer landed badly.

“When?”

“Three times.”

He remembered one message.

Emma Brooks had asked for ten minutes privately after a family dinner.

Marcus intercepted him in the hallway and said Brooks was worried about “girl drama” between Emma and Ruby.

Vincent had been late for a meeting.

He told Marcus to handle it.

Another time, Bianca herself told Vincent that Brooks was becoming too involved in Ruby’s relationship with her mother.

Vincent had accepted that too.

He looked at Emma Brooks.

“What did Ruby tell you happened?”

“She never gave me a complete story.”

Brooks swallowed.

“But she said Bianca gets angry when anybody praises Emma.”

Vincent looked toward his daughter’s room.

“Because Bianca thinks Ruby should get the attention?”

“That’s what I assumed.”

Brooks hesitated.

“Until Ruby told me something else.”

“What?”

“She said when Emma gets praised, Ruby gets scared.”

That made no sense.

Not yet.

Vincent looked toward the hallway.

Somewhere down it sat Bianca.

May you like

Somewhere else sat Marcus.

And inside Rebecca Sloan’s evidence bag was a tablet containing a second video both of them had been terrified to let him see.
