Chapter 7

Hotel service cameras covered the preparation hall.

Not the private dressing rooms.

Not the children’s suite.

But enough.

At 5:42 p.m., Bianca entered the styling room.

Ruby followed.

At 5:51, Ruby came out alone.

She was crying.

Emma Brooks saw her in the corridor and approached.

The cameras had no useful audio.

Brooks remembered the conversation.

“Ruby asked me whether she had to lie if a grown-up told her to.”

Vincent looked at her.

“What did you say?”

“That she should tell the truth to the safe adult asking her questions.”

“Did you mention Monday?”

“Yes.”

Ruby knew someone was coming to speak with her.

Bianca had already told her.

Brooks told the child she would not get in trouble for being honest.

At 5:57 p.m., Leo entered the corridor.

Ruby whispered something to him.

“What?” Rebecca asked later.

Leo had already spoken with the child specialist once.

His answer was preserved.

“Ruby said she was going to tell the lady the truth.”

At 6:04 p.m., Bianca emerged from the dressing room.

She looked directly at Ruby.

Then at Emma Brooks.

Then at Leo.

The camera showed no confrontation.

At 6:16, Bianca entered the service styling area and took a pair of hair-cutting scissors from a supply tray.

The stylist later confirmed she did not ask permission.

At 6:22, Bianca texted Marcus.

The message had been deleted.

Recovered metadata led investigators to a cloud backup.

It said:

She’s decided to make me the monster Monday.

Marcus responded:

Then she needs to understand there are consequences tonight.

Vincent read the message.

His stomach tightened.

“Who is she?”

Rebecca said:

“Context suggests Ruby.”

Another message followed.

Bianca:

Not her.

Marcus:

Then make the point without touching her.

That changed everything.

Vincent read it again.

Without touching her.

Ruby.

Bianca was angry at Ruby.

But Marcus had told her not to touch Ruby.

Why?

Because Ruby was about to be interviewed.

Fresh bruises or a visible injury would make their situation worse.

Then who was the consequence for?

Vincent already knew the answer before anyone said it.

At 6:31 p.m., child Emma entered the ballroom in her birthday dress.

Hair in the long decorative side braid she had been excited about all week.

Ruby immediately ran to her.

Hotel footage showed Ruby touching the braid and smiling.

Bianca watched from the other side of the room.

At 6:38, she approached.

At 6:39, Leo’s first recording began.

The same recording the ballroom had watched.

Bianca restraining Emma.

Scissors opening.

The braid falling.

Who gave you the right to outshine my daughter?

The line sounded different now.

Rebecca still refused to finish the theory without more.

“Intent is the part we prove last.”

The proof came from Marcus’s phone.

One final deleted message sent seconds before Bianca crossed the ballroom.

Bianca:

She cares about that little girl more than she cares what happens to herself.

Marcus did not answer.

He did not need to.

Part 10 was waiting.

But Vincent had already begun to understand the horror.

May you like

Emma had never been the target of Bianca’s jealousy.

She had been selected because Ruby loved her.
