Chapter 11

Bianca admitted the intent before trial.
Not everything.
Not immediately.
But enough.
The meeting occurred with attorneys present.
Vincent did not bring Emma.
He did not bring Ruby.
He did not bring Leo.
Children were finished carrying adult conversations.
Bianca looked tired.
No diamonds.
No expensive gown.
No family performance.
Vincent placed the hotel timeline on the table.
“You knew Ruby planned to tell the truth Monday.”
Bianca looked down.
“Yes.”
“You coached her to blame Brooks.”
“I wanted her to stop exaggerating.”
Vincent’s eyes hardened.
“Try again.”
Bianca swallowed.
“I wanted her to say Brooks influenced her.”
“Did Brooks?”
“No.”
“Did you hit Ruby?”
Bianca closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
There it was.
No child required to prove it again.
Vincent continued.
“Why Emma?”
Bianca began crying.
He waited.
“She loves her.”
“Ruby.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted to frighten Ruby.”
“I wanted her to understand how serious this was.”
Vincent stared at her.
“You held a four-year-old down with scissors.”
“I knew I wasn’t going to cut her skin.”
“You think that helps?”
“No.”
“You cut my daughter’s hair because your daughter wouldn’t lie for you.”
Bianca covered her face.
Vincent did not stop.
“And you said it was because Emma outshone Ruby.”
“I needed people to think I lost my temper.”
“Why?”
“Because anger looked better than what it really was.”
That sentence was brutally clear.
Bianca had understood even in the moment that an impulsive jealous assault was less damning than calculated intimidation of a child witness.
Vincent leaned back.
“Why did you need Ruby silent badly enough to do this?”
Bianca’s answer was not only money.
“Because if she told them I hit her, I lose her.”
“You were already losing her.”
“I didn’t see it that way.”
“And the trust?”
Her face tightened.
“Yes.”
“How much did you know?”
“That Marcus inflated things.”
“Did you benefit?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know the invoices were false?”
“Some.”
Vincent looked at Rebecca.
Bianca continued before anyone asked.
“I kept telling myself it was Ruby’s money being spent on Ruby’s life.”
Vincent looked back at her.
“A tutor who never arrived was not Ruby’s life.”
“I know.”
“You know now.”
Bianca started crying again.
Vincent felt no urge to comfort her.
Motive explained the road.
It did not erase where she chose to go.
Before he left, Bianca whispered:
“Tell Ruby I’m sorry.”
Vincent stopped.
“No.”
She looked up.
“That apology is yours to earn the right to offer someday.”
May you like
“I’m her mother.”
“That is why you owed her more.”
