Chapter 9

The financial audit established motive.

Not the entire motive.

Enough.

Marcus had created a network of legitimate vendors that provided some real services and billed for far more.

A tutoring company existed.

Ruby had attended eight sessions.

The trust paid for thirty-two.

A child-security consultant existed.

He provided occasional transportation planning.

The trust paid him as though he maintained continuous coverage.

An etiquette coach had seen Ruby six times.

Invoices claimed twenty-seven visits.

A portion of the excess flowed back through Marcus’s consulting company.

Some reached Bianca’s event business through subcontracting payments.

The total questionable amount reached $1.14 million.

Bianca did not spend it all personally.

Some paid real business expenses.

Some covered Marcus’s debts.

Some funded family events.

That made their justification predictable.

They told themselves the trust was still spending money “around Ruby.”

No one was stealing from a stranger.

No one was emptying the account.

They were simply taking compensation they believed the family owed them.

Then the abuse investigation threatened everything.

If Bianca lost custody, the corporate trustee would stop accepting her requests.

A guardian change would trigger a complete review of prior expenses.

Ruby telling the truth on Monday could expose both the physical abuse and the money.

Marcus needed Emma Brooks discredited because Brooks knew two dangerous facts:

Ruby was afraid of Bianca.

And many of the paid specialists had never appeared.

Bianca needed Ruby to repeat the story that Brooks created the accusations.

Ruby refused.

The hotel footage showed what followed.

The styling-room scissors.

The message to Marcus.

Then she needs to understand there are consequences tonight.

Not her.

Then make the point without touching her.

That line had protected Ruby from one direct act of violence.

Not because Marcus became moral.

Because visible harm before Monday would be strategically disastrous.

Then Bianca chose Emma.

Daniel found one final piece of corroboration in Bianca’s event assistant’s statement.

Before the gala, Bianca had asked:

“Is Emma keeping that braid all night?”

The assistant thought she meant Ruby.

Bianca clarified:

“Vincent’s Emma.”

“Why?”

“She’ll be in every photograph.”

The assistant said yes.

Bianca stared at the child for several seconds.

At the time it looked like vanity.

Afterward, it looked like selection.

The attack had been planned long enough for Bianca to obtain scissors and make sure Ruby witnessed it.

Vincent looked at Rebecca.

“She wasn’t jealous.”

“Maybe she was.”

Rebecca always made him be precise.

“People can have more than one motive.”

Vincent nodded.

“But jealousy doesn’t explain the timing.”

“No.”

“Monday does.”

“Yes.”

“Ruby refusing does.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma mattered because Ruby loved her.”

Rebecca closed the file.

“That is what the evidence is pointing toward.”

The final confirmation would come from two places.

Ruby’s own account.

May you like

And Bianca.

The first arrived that afternoon.
