Chapter 8

Vincent made the irreversible decision before the full motive was formally established.

He removed Bianca and Marcus from every legitimate family role they held.

Marcus lost procurement authority, event-company access, and his office inside Caradonna Holdings.

Bianca lost access to all Caradonna residences and all unsupervised contact with Emma, Leo, and Ruby.

Then Vincent went further.

He authorized a full external audit of every vendor Marcus had connected to Ruby’s trust or the Caradonna estate.

He provided Leo’s videos to investigators through counsel.

He provided hotel footage.

He told the child-protection agency that if Ruby needed emergency kinship options, the family would cooperate with whatever placement professionals determined was appropriate.

He did not demand that Ruby come live with him.

Rebecca considered that important.

“She is not property you rescue into your house.”

“I know.”

“You’re learning.”

“Don’t enjoy it.”

Rebecca almost smiled.

Vincent also gave Emma Brooks independent legal counsel paid through a neutral arrangement.

Brooks protested.

“I can hire my own lawyer.”

“You should choose your own.”

“I can pay.”

“Then mine doesn’t pay.”

Vincent stopped himself.

“Sorry.”

Brooks looked at him.

That was new too.

He tried again.

“Do you want help with legal fees?”

She considered.

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

No conditions.

No loyalty agreement.

No confidentiality promise.

Vincent’s older advisers hated almost everything he was doing.

One told him:

“You are letting a housekeeper become a witness against family.”

Vincent looked at him.

“She was a witness before anybody asked my permission.”

The adviser changed subjects.

The audit produced consequences almost immediately.

The corporate trustee froze discretionary reimbursements requested by Bianca pending review.

Marcus’s consulting company lost access to new payments.

Two vendors hired criminal lawyers.

One provided records voluntarily.

The Caradonna businesses themselves came under questions because some vendor invoices overlapped with estate expenses.

Vincent had expected that.

He did not stop the audit.

Then Bianca’s lawyer contacted Rebecca.

Bianca wanted to negotiate before investigators interpreted the hotel attack as part of something larger.

Vincent refused a private family settlement.

“If she has an explanation, she gives it where it can be documented.”

Rebecca asked:

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“No quiet restitution?”

“No.”

“No family apology?”

“No.”

He looked toward the room where Emma was coloring with one side of her hair several inches shorter than the other.

“She used a four-year-old to send a message.”

May you like

His voice remained calm.

“Nothing about that stays inside the family.”
