Chapter 14

Helena spent the next several months outside the estate.
She did not fight Domenico’s restrictions.
She stopped calling staff.
Stopped sending gifts through intermediaries after Dr. Whitaker explained that repeated presents could pressure Emma into feeling responsible for reconciliation.
Instead, Helena did something nobody expected.
She entered family counseling alone.
Domenico did not reward her for it.
He simply noticed.
Eventually Dr. Whitaker suggested a possibility.
Not forgiveness.
A supervised meeting.
Only if Domenico wanted it.
Only if Emma showed no distress.
Only if Helena understood that the purpose was not to get her old place back.
Domenico refused the first time.
Two weeks later, he reconsidered.
Not because Helena was entitled to another chance.
Because Emma had started asking why “Aunt Helena lives away.”
The first meeting happened in Dr. Whitaker’s office.
No estate.
No family hall.
No jewelry-heavy matriarch surrounded by staff.
Just Helena, Domenico, Emma, and the therapist.
Helena crouched when Emma entered.
She did not reach for her.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Emma hid partly behind Domenico.
Helena’s eyes filled, but she did not move closer.
Emma asked the question Domenico knew would come.
“Did you pack my room?”
Helena looked at Dr. Whitaker.
The therapist said nothing.
The answer belonged to Helena.
“I helped.”
Emma frowned.
“Why?”
Helena swallowed.
“Because I thought grown-ups should decide where children belong.”
Emma looked toward Domenico.
Then back.
“That was mean.”
Helena closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
No explanation about tradition.
No speech about intention.
No claim that Bianca was worse.
Just yes.
Emma did not hug her.
She returned to the toy table.
The meeting lasted twenty minutes.
When it ended, Helena walked to the parking lot alone.
Domenico watched through the window.
May you like
He felt no triumph.
Only the strange weight of seeing someone finally carry what she had spent months trying to explain away.
