Chapter 10

Claribel requested one private conversation.

I gave her twenty minutes.

No engagement ring on my table.

She still wore hers.

That irritated me.

“I love you.”

I believed her.

“That isn’t the disputed fact.”

She looked confused.

People like simple categories.

Love or no love.

Good or bad.

Reality rarely cooperates.

“I wanted a life with you.”

“You wanted a life emptied for you.”

She cried.

“You make that sound monstrous.”

“I found my five-year-old son hungry inside a cage.”

That ended the argument.

For a moment.

Then she whispered:

“You always choose him.”

“Yes.”

She flinched.

Good.

I continued.

“He is five.”

Silence.

“And my mother?”

“You always choose her too.”

“When she needs me, yes.”

“What was I supposed to get?”

There it was.

Love treated like a scarce resource.

I leaned back.

“Me.”

She stared.

“Not ownership of every part of my attention.”

Tears fell.

She told me about childhood.

Her father remarried.

New wife controlled access.

Claribel learned early that whoever controlled the household controlled love.

Useful explanation.

Terrible inheritance.

She repeated what she survived.

But this time she stood in the powerful position.

“I thought if I built the house correctly, no one could take you from me.”

“You started by taking everyone from me.”

She closed her eyes.

Then removed the engagement ring.

Finally.

“What happens now?”

“You leave.”

Her face broke.

“Forever?”

“I don’t know.”

Not hope.

Truth.

“But you will never be my wife.”

That part I knew.

She nodded.

No threat.

No revenge.

No dramatic punishment.

She left through the same front doors she once expected my mother and son to leave through after our wedding.

The difference mattered.

May you like

She walked by choice.

They would not have.
