Chapter 12

Mother’s speech therapy improved slowly.
No miracle.
Some sounds returned.
Mostly rough syllables.
Her board remained faster.
One afternoon I found her practicing my name.
“Ev…”
She stopped.
Frustrated.
I sat beside her.
“No hurry.”
She glared.
Apparently “no hurry” is irritating when someone has spent months unable to finish a sentence.
She tried again.
“Ev…ard.”
Close enough.
I smiled.
She rolled her eyes.
Then pointed toward Milo outside.
He was running across the lawn carrying three bread rolls like stolen treasure.
Mother laughed.
A sound this time.
Small.
Real.
I had forgotten how much I missed it.
She tapped the board.
CLARIBEL?
I understood.
“No contact unless you want it.”
Mother considered.
Then spelled:
NOT YET.
Good.
Her choice.
No one translating.
No one deciding.
Not yet.
Weeks became months.
Claribel sent one letter to Mother.
I did not open it.
Did not summarize it.
Did not even tell Beatrice what I thought she should do.
I placed it beside her board.
She stared at it.
Then pushed it away.
Unopened.
Also choice.
Later she changed her mind.
Read it with Marian.
Then asked me to burn it.
I did.
No archive.
No lesson.
Some words exist only for the person receiving them.
Claribel apparently apologized without asking forgiveness.
That was all Mother told me.
Then she spelled:
BETTER.
Not forgiven.
May you like
Better.
Enough.
