Chapter 13

Milo’s hunger lasted longer than Claribel’s presence.

Not physical hunger.

Fear around food.

At receptions, he took bread and hid it in pockets.

At breakfast, he asked whether he had been “good enough” for eggs.

One afternoon I found two rolls beneath his pillow.

I sat beside him.

“Emergency bread?”

He looked embarrassed.

“In case.”

“In case what?”

“No dinner.”

My chest tightened.

I did not tell him never to hide food.

That would turn safety into another rule.

Instead I put a small basket in his room.

Fruit.

Crackers.

Bread.

Always available.

No permission.

For weeks he checked it constantly.

Then less.

Eventually he forgot about it.

That was the goal.

Abundance becoming boring.

Leonora helped.

Not as replacement mother.

Not as heroine.

As the maid who had tried to feed him when someone else said no.

Milo trusted her.

One day he asked:

“Did Dad tell you basket?”

She smiled.

“No.”

He looked at me.

Good.

Not every kind thing in the house had to come through my authority.

That was another lesson.

Claribel had centralized everything around herself.

I had centralized too much around me long before her.

Healthy houses need multiple safe adults.

Not one perfect gatekeeper.

I expanded direct reporting.

Nanny.

House steward.

Security.

Medical staff.

Mother’s companion.

No one person controlled access.

May you like

Less elegant.

More human.
