Chapter 15

Beatrice chose to see Claribel four months later.

Her idea.

I asked once:

“You sure?”

Mother gave me the look that raised me.

Enough.

Claribel came to the sunroom.

No engagement jewelry.

No authority.

She stopped several feet away.

“Mrs. Harcourt.”

Mother pointed at the chair.

Claribel sat.

The board rested across Beatrice’s lap.

She spelled:

YOU SPOKE FOR ME.

Claribel nodded.

“Yes.”

YOU LIED TO MY SON.

“Yes.”

YOU HURT MY GRANDSON.

Claribel began crying.

“Yes.”

Mother paused.

Then:

WHY?

Claribel answered without childhood stories first.

Good.

“Because I wanted control.”

Mother waited.

“And because I was jealous of anyone Everard loved without needing me.”

Mother’s eyes softened slightly.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Then she spelled:

LOVE IS NOT A QUEUE.

I almost laughed.

Claribel did not.

She cried harder.

Mother continued:

MILO IS CHILD.

I AM MOTHER.

YOU WERE FIANCEE.

DIFFERENT PLACES.

NOT COMPETITION.

There.

The entire disaster reduced to simple categories.

Claribel nodded.

Then asked:

“Can you forgive me?”

Mother looked irritated.

Too soon.

She spelled:

NOT TODAY.

Claribel gave a broken little laugh.

“Fair.”

At the door, Mother tapped the board again.

NEVER SPEAK FOR ME AGAIN.

Claribel turned.

“I won’t.”

Good.

The meeting ended.

No hug.

May you like

No restored relationship.

Just a boundary spoken by the woman everyone had spent months pretending could not speak.
