Chapter 7

The lake house staff had been told I approved everything.

Of course.

The manager showed me the instructions over the phone.

Prepare Beatrice’s downstairs suite.

Remove telephones because “rest requires calm.”

Limit Milo’s calls because separation anxiety worsens when children contact home too often.

I closed my eyes.

Claribel had thought through isolation.

Not impulsively.

Methodically.

“What about visitors?”

The manager hesitated.

“Miss Fairfax said visits would be restricted at first.”

Of course.

Mother without her communication board.

Milo without me.

Both surrounded by staff believing I wanted distance.

A perfect closed loop.

Then the manager mentioned something else.

“Sir, Miss Fairfax asked us to prepare a small dining schedule for Milo.”

“What schedule?”

“Meals after lessons only.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

So the hunger at the pavilion was not random cruelty.

It was rehearsal.

Food attached to compliance.

Access attached to obedience.

The same system planned for the lake house.

I looked at Claribel.

“You were conditioning him before sending him away.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Animals wait until the guests finish.”

Her own words.

She flinched.

“I was angry.”

“Since breakfast?”

Silence.

Leonora had tried to feed him twice.

Claribel stopped her.

Why?

Because Milo had refused to apologize after sneaking into Beatrice’s room that morning.

He had hugged his grandmother.

Claribel considered that disobedience.

My son lost breakfast.

Then lunch.

Then was placed inside the decorative cage during the reception because he tried taking bread from the buffet.

Claribel called that consistency.

I called it exactly what it was.

Control.

I asked:

“Did my mother approve the lake house?”

“No.”

Finally.

“Did Milo?”

“No.”

“Did I?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Claribel looked at me.

“I did.”

There.

No borrowed authority.

No interpretation.

May you like

Just choice.

That was the first truly honest answer she had given since the reception.
