Chapter 11

Clara woke the next morning.

I was holding her hand when her fingers moved.

At first I thought I imagined it.

Then her eyes opened.

Confusion came before pain.

Then memory.

Her hand moved toward her stomach.

Stopped.

She looked at me.

I could not lie.

Not to her.

“Clara.”

Her face changed.

“No.”

I moved closer.

Her breathing broke.

“No.”

I held her while she cried.

There are forms of grief no power can enter.

No organization.

No revenge.

No threat.

Nothing.

I could only stay.

After a long time, she whispered:

“They took my phone.”

“I found the recording.”

Her eyes closed.

“Dad wanted the baby.”

“I know.”

“He said you’d disappear.”

“I’m here.”

That made her cry harder.

Then she asked the question I had been afraid of.

“Did you kill them?”

I looked at her.

“No.”

She opened her eyes.

Surprised.

“Not yet,” I admitted.

That almost made her laugh.

Almost.

Then she became serious.

“Don’t.”

I said nothing.

“Dominic.”

“They did this to you.”

“Yes.”

“To our baby.”

Her face folded again.

I hated myself for saying it.

She gripped my hand.

“That’s why you don’t become them.”

I looked away.

“I told Arthur I was digging nine graves.”

Clara breathed slowly.

Then whispered:

“Bury what they built.”

I looked back at her.

She was exhausted.

Bruised.

Heartbroken.

Still clearer than every man in that Bennett house.

“Not them.”

That sentence changed the shape of my revenge.

Not softened it.

Changed it.

Arthur had spent his life believing punishment mattered only when somebody bled.

Clara understood something he never would.
