Chapter 15

Arthur requested to see Clara after a month.

She surprised me.

She said yes.

The meeting happened at our house.

Vale house.

Not Bennett territory.

Arthur arrived alone.

He looked smaller without sons behind him.

Clara sat beside me.

He looked at her stomach first.

She noticed.

“So that’s still what you see.”

Arthur’s eyes moved to her face.

“You’re my daughter.”

“Then say my name before the baby you wanted.”

He did not.

That told her everything.

Arthur tried to explain.

The Bennett organization was collapsing. His sons were divided. Captains were leaving. He believed a grandchild raised differently could restore what he built.

Clara laughed softly.

“You almost killed me because you were disappointed in your sons.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

“I was protecting the family.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You were replacing it.”

Silence.

Arthur finally said:

“I never wanted you hurt.”

Clara’s expression changed.

I had heard versions of that sentence all my life.

Intent as camouflage.

“You held the door closed,” she said.

Arthur stopped.

That detail I had not known.

Neither had her brothers told me.

Clara continued.

“When Elias pushed me and I tried to leave, you held the door closed.”

Arthur looked at me.

Bad choice.

Clara noticed.

“Don’t look at him.”

Arthur looked back.

“I was begging you.”

Her voice broke.

“Not Dominic. Not my brothers. You.”

Arthur’s face tightened.

“I was your father.”

“You were.”

Past tense.

That was the blow.

Arthur heard it.

So did I.

Clara stood carefully.

“You wanted a Bennett future.”

She opened the door.

“You don’t get mine.”

Arthur left without another word.

I did not touch him.

Did not threaten him.

Did not need to.

May you like

The grave Clara chose for him was simple.

He would live knowing his daughter stopped calling him father.
